JCCHS Travels Abroad!
Students from Jackson County Comprehensive High School will once again have an opportunity to be international travelers. This spring break students from JCCHS will journey “across the pond” for an educational and exciting trip to England. The itinerary will include attending the Opening Ceremonies for the Tower of London, a visit to the Churchill WWII War Rooms, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Globe Theatre, and Westminster Abbey. Other activities include a nighttime Jack the Ripper Tour, a ride on the London Eye, and an evening at a West End Theatre production. The students will also spend a day touring the campus at Oxford University and visit the Harry Potter Studios. Other side trips will include a visit to Stonehenge and the city of Bath.
Group leader, Bonnie Roberts, is the theatre teacher at Jackson County Comprehensive and has been leading student travel groups for 17 years. When asked about the reasons for taking students to London, she replied, “Why travel? Confucius once said, ‘I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.’ By “doing”—meeting people from another country, walking in the footsteps of kings, authors, and statesmen, seeing the art that inspires a people, students gain an understanding of themselves and the world that will stay with them for a lifetime. The beginning of critical thinking is making connections. Students connect what they’ve learned in the classroom with what they’re seeing and experiencing firsthand. This gives them a richer and more nuanced understanding of the concepts they learn in the classroom.”
Dr. Pete Jones, principal of JCCHS, definitely supports student travel. “The London trip is a great opportunity for our students to get out and see another part of the world. By exploring other places and cultures, we have a chance to grow as people and to develop a greater understanding of the world around us.”
Previously JCCHS students have traveled to England, Ireland, Scotland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, and Greece.
Students will be raising money through various fundraisers and activities throughout the fall and winter.
This trip is open to all JCCHS students, their parents, and WJMS 8th graders who travel with a parent. If you are interested traveling with the group or would like more details, contact Bonnie Roberts at JCCHS 706-367-5003 extension 13804 or at her email firstname.lastname@example.org.
